Dune Rats – ‘Pogo’
Proudly presenting the sweet new track from DUNE RATS before it gets shipped off to radio. Vacation vibes all ’round, ‘Pogo’ is the first single off the band’s second EP Social Atoms, which is set for release this month.
To co-incide with the release of Social Atoms, the Brissie duo will be cutting loose on the East Coast for a select number of dates in Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Goldcoast, Toowoomba, Brisbane and Byron Bay.
Hit it up!
Meredith 2011 Line-up
The Meredith lineup came out today and in addition to the imported goods on the bill (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Kurt Vile, Exposions in the Sky, Black Joe Lewis etc) there’s some decent local acts that have been added. I got trampled by middle aged corporates when Icehouse played at a gala ball earlier this year, so I’ll probably refrain from going in for a second helping of Electric Blue. Rounding off the veteran sector of the lineup is former Moodists frontman Dave Graney. Adalita, Oscar & Martin, Matt Sonic & The High Times and Graveyard Train have also been annouced, as well as festival regulars Cut Copy and Eagle & The Worm. Geelong’s King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard will be opening the proceedings which should be a treat.
Not many 21st’s rearrange the solar system and let you BYO anyway.
The ballot closes on the 23rd of August.
GRINDERMAN * CUT/COPY * KURT VILE & THE VIOLATORS * MUDHONEY * ICEHOUSE * GANG GANG DANCE * EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY * LADYHAWKE * BLACK JOE LEWIS & THE HONEYBEARS * OFF! * ADALITA * FUTURE OF THE LEFT * FRANK FAIRFIELD * HARMONIC 313 (DJ SET) * JOELISTICS * BIG FREEDIA * UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA * GRAVEYARD TRAIN * TIM SWEENEY * OSCAR + MARTIN * CASH SAVAGE & THE LAST DRINKS * ANGUS SAMPSON * BARBARION * KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD * JUICEBOXXX * VIRGO FOUR * EAGLE & THE WORM * THE RECHORDS * DAVE GRANEY & THE LURID YELLOW MIST * MATT SONIC & THE HIGH TIMES * THE TOWN BIKES * CITY OF BALLARAT MUNICIPAL BRASS BAND * MASTER SONG TAI CHI * SILENCE WEDGE * A TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
Chet Faker – 'House Atriedes'
‘House Atriedes’ (mp3)
‘Jeans & Wallet’ (mp3)
You may recall Chet Faker (aka. Nick Murphy) who went all kinds of crazy on the interwebs (above James Blake in Hypem’s #10) after we MAP-ed his cover of Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ back in May. The bearded juggernaut is back with a nice platter of downloads for y’all.
Overdoses of electronica usually have a sluggish effect on me, but Chet keeps his cool without inducing a yawn. House Atriedes’ iridescent intro stretches out onto a vast expanse of synth, while those liquid harmonies keep on with the smooth restraint of ‘No Diggity’. This track is my fave out of the Chet Faker pool so far, with ‘Jeans and Wallet’ trawling closely after.
Serious aural elixir. The guy can do no wrong.
sleepmakeswaves – '(hello) cloud mountain' (video)
Let’s get one thing straight – post rock isn’t elevator music. Sure, some of it’s a little winding & pretentious and there are usually far too many words in post-rock band names (as well as grammatical confusion), but as a style it’s enthralling, interesting and often confronting – when done well.
Thankfully for the Australian post-rock scene, sleepmakeswaves do it well (and in less than 140 characters). (hello) cloud mountain is off their new album, and comes pre-packaged in a beautiful film clip, laden with tidy visual metaphors. It was directed/filmed/edited by Frederick Lloyd, a 20 year old Brit doing amazing things with a camera. The track itself manages to pull off the epic feel of post-rock without the epic lengths – at just over three minutes, it’s a long step from some other opus’. If I was going to dive into clichés, I’d use words like “sweeping sound-scapes”, “delicate” and “multi-instrumental aural experience, filled with dreams of home and lost love” – but since it’s Tuesday, I’m not going to do that. Instead you get one of the best pieces of post-rock that I’ve ever heard come out of Australia.
If you haven’t listened to much (or any) post-rock, sleepmakeswaves are a great starting point. If you listen to a lot, their new album …and so we destroyed everything is available right now on bandcamp, and well worth the $12-something.
Check out their FB for more details on their (very fast approaching) shows. I know I’ll be there.
Oh and also, if you haven’t already – make the video huge, crank your speakers, and chill. It’s worth it.
The Delta Riggs – 'Time' (video)
How much ‘Fitzroy’ can you pack into a garage? Self explanatory salute from Melbourne (via GC) collective The Delta Riggs. FT: large fixie parade, several cute pets, customised denim, one party time hobo + a cameo from a former WTH contributor.
‘Time’ is the first single off Talupo Mountain Music Vol. 1. The band are in the process of laying down ‘Vol. 2’, which is expected to be released late September.
Produced & Edited by Petty Thieves.
