Aleks and the Ramps – ‘Middle Aged Unicorn On Beach With Sunset’ (mp3)

They had my favourite Aus album of 2009 with Midnight Believer, and now they’re back! Also, that album is going to be re-released on the same day as their (still untitled?) newbie next Feb 14th (great Valentines Day pressie). Looking forward to some more barritone-quirky-folktronica-pop.

Also, they’re playing at The Gate in Sydney next month if you’re around.

Update: The re-releases are actually out next week from October 27th!

The Rubens – ‘Lay It Down’

Digging this smooth Auerbach style tune in the key of CROON from this Sydney four piece. Some great bluesy drawls and lazy instrumentals going on. I’m picturing this as one of of those tracks the bar dude secretly pours his heart out to when he’s mopping up broken glass at closing time. Considering they’ve only been jamming since Feb, this is pretty decent. The guys haven’t put out a proper release yet, however a few international stations have been vibing on this tune lately so I’d definitely be keeping an eye out here.

The Rubens are playing next Friday (28th Oct) for Mum’s 4th Birthday at World Bar.

Catcall – ‘Satellites’

Was going to wait for the initial hype around this one to die down before posting it, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon. Kudos to Catcall. If you’re part of the minority who haven’t checked out this tune yet then here you go! Enjoy a sweet summer with a shot of 80s electro for good measure.

'Ghost' of Young Romantics

We covered the first single release of Young Romantic’s film clip for ‘Dark Times’, but after hearing them play recently around the Sydney traps, I thought I’d give them a second look.

The band’s made up of some talented players; the drummer playing for Slow Down Honey, while the singer Dave Jenkins Jr is also in SDH and plays in the backing band for Mister Andy Bull. Together they’ve created a unique sound, and a promising start with this first EP ‘Dark Times’.

This track ‘Ghost’ opens with a guitar tone worthy of a Tarantino film, moving swiftly into an authentic 80’s driving swagger, with a vocal delivery reminiscent of Steve Kilby from The Church – A classic lazy, deep, drawl. The song instantly puts me in a movie scene, where some serious shit’s just gone down, and now I’m on a mission. Driving a black Mustang. Cool Track, I like it.

But that’s just me. Feel free to send in your own imaginary adventures.
