King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – 'Dead Beat'

, , No Comment

Listen to
(mp3)

The newie from King Gizzard runs as a decent guide to swamp, sleaze and primate mating. The follow up to ‘Black Tooth’, ‘Dead Beat’ grovels with post-pubescent rich pickings: reverb abuse, indulgent solos, happy happy Reatard – stuff that generally makes for a good time. Expect a bit more slag + limbs at gigs. Some small woman barreling around the front at the last show kindly expectorated into my face…so if you’re into that kinda thing, I guess it’s an even better reason to get along to a show.

The guys will be launching their EP Willoughby’s Beach in October with dates in Melb + Syd, see the poster below for details.

The Medics – ‘Beggars’ (video)

YouTube Preview Image

From the press release:

Having migrated from their hometown of Cairns to the inspiring music community of Bris-Vegas, THE MEDICS wasted no time making their mark.

Kahl, Jhindu, Andrew & Charles have certainly made the most of the opportunity to create their debut album due out in early 2012.  The first single BEGGARS has already won them a Queensland Music Award and garnered some serious Triple J airplay.  Keep your eyes peeled for the emotive video for BEGGARS – it will surely find it’s way to your screens over the coming weeks.

They are a must see at this year’s BIGSOUND LIVE, and set to more than warm up the crowd supporting Birds Of Tokyo.

THE MEDICS are pretty excited to have also recently added some new members to their team, signing with Brisbane based Warner Music indie imprint, Footstomp Records.”

I’d just like to say I told you so.

Amaya Laucirica – 'No Excuses'

‘No Excuses’ – (mp3)

Listen to

After spending latter months of last year being lulled into a lackadaisical malaise by Amaya’s last record, ‘Early Summer’, I’m stoked she’s back with a new tune. While Laucirica was on the road supporting Adalita on her national tour earlier this year, she’ll be heading out on a tour of her own for the release of new EP ‘Anywhere There’s You’ throughout October. She’s quite petite in stature, but all that dreamy open-road stuff gets amplified sevenfold live.

Amaya will be showcasing this week at BIGSOUND in Brissie, so if you industry types/general aficionados are loitering around, definitely recommend catching some tunes from this lady.

TOUR DATES:

Wednesday September 7 – Ric’s Cafe (10:40pm) BIGSOUND, Brisbane QLD

Saturday October 8 –  The Wheatsheaf, Adelaide SA

Saturday October – FBI Social, Sydney NSW

Friday October 21 –  X and Y Bar, Brisbane QLD

Saturday October 22 – The Workers Club, Melbourne VIC

Saturday November 26 – Queenscliff Music Festival

The Polar Knights @ Verge Festival

, , No Comment

We’re talking darling indie-pop here – darling as in your first girlfriend, holding-hands-on-a-summer-day-but-never-kissing sweetness with a dash of hipster charm and a surprisingly mature style & implementation. They’re called Polar Knights, they’re punny & witty and also delightfully virginal for all their top-shelf presentation. Looking forward to their EP whilst tapping to this free-as-balls track, Burst at the Seams.

Their set wasn’t perfect, but it was honest and heartfelt, with real moments of (seemingly) emotional purity. One particular standout was City Fail, an ode to the spectacular failings of Sydney’s rail system – something I think we can all identify with. The venue itself was awesome – many thanks go out to the Verge Festival. I love a sneaky gazebo.

Matthew Colin’s World War

Matthew Colin’s World War – ‘Thieves’ (mp3)

Listen to

Matt Palmer’s one of Brisbane’s most underrated songwriters.
He’s kept a pretty low profile since his band Dextor’s Conscience called it quits in 2009, but he hasn’t spent the past two years drinking beers and playing xbox in his jocks.

Rather, he’s ditched the American accent and upped the honesty in his new project is Matthew Colin’s World War.
His upcoming Living Room Project tour is exactly what it sounds like.
Matt will play living rooms around the country, and release the performances on DVD.

He’s coming to Sydney this weekend to play in a living room at Lindfield on Sunday night.
If you’re keen to go, you can purchase tickets over at Oztix. Once you’ve done that, you’ll get an email with the exact address.
He’s looking for a Saturday night show too – if you’re keen to have a nice dude playing great music, get in touch with him via the band’s Facebook page.

Matt is also playing shows in Yeerongpilly and Mitchelton in Brisbane. If you head along to any of these shows, you’ll be able to pre-order the DVD and pick up one of these bad boys.
