Some new sex music outta Australia from a dude in a cool wolf mask. Look at how hairy those wrists – definitely a wolf. All the better to play a sampler with, my dear. This is one for peeps who like Dam-Funk et al.

Gotye ft. Kimbra – 'Somebody That I Used To Know' (video)
New video for the second track released off Gotye’s upcoming album. Directed by Natasha Pincus, the clip also features some original artwork by Wally’s dad, Frank De Backer.
This is a sandwich I would like to be in.
Making Mirrors is out on August 19th through Eleven.
Little Scout – ‘We Are Walking Out’ (video)
Back in 2008, I decided I wanted to blog for this site in order to improve my writing (yes, I was that naive) and to gush about bands I really really liked. Hearing Little Scout’s first single ‘Dead Loss’ and not seeing anyone else gushing about it prompted me to email Jerry Soer and ask if he’d let me join the fun here. They were one of the first bands I posted about.
Now I’ve kind of sort of left the blog (as has Jerry), and Little Scout are releasing their debut album, after releasing some great EPs and building a solid touring CV.
Fuck yeah, history.
Ghoul – ‘Lodum (Rising)’
Ghoul – ‘Lodum (Rising)’ (mp3)
So word has it that Ghoul’s debut LP proper will now be out early next year, not mid-2011 (ie. now) like they suggested earlier this year. I’m not sick of their mini-LP Dunks yet, but still – you can’t play with a boy’s heart like this. If you are do need something to tide you over, they’ve released a track from the album to keep us on the hook. It’s fair bit different to Dunks, working with a bit of tribal “never-have-that-recipe-again” groove, but still sounding undeniably like Ghoul thanks to singer Ivan’s downright incredible voice. Best voice in Australian music? Probs.
I'lls' – 'Thrice'
Whoever’s idea it was to slap a few apostrophes in this band name for some harmless fun should probably be shot. Screwing with syntax may get your band cut through, but it’s highly inconvenient for the rest of us trying to conduct a google search.
Pronounced ‘isles’ not ‘ills’, this new Melb three piece scored a Parklife spot after just one gig. Frontman Simon Lam also plays in The Ocean Party and Kins.
The first thirty seconds of this track fizzles out on the contemplative slow burner, but some gorgeous layers begin to surface soon after. A thoughtful, transient track – multi-tiered parts jump out of the ether and evaporate into the troposphere in a seamless dissolve. That cruisy guitar hook plucked from the void at 2.11 tops it for me.
Willing to get past the grammatical mindfuck, because I’m convinced this is a pretty awesome tune.
Catch I’lls’ at Parklife alongside other locals Gold Fields, Kimbra, Bon Chat Bon Rat, 8 Bit Love and more.
Founds, Mushu, Tin Sparrow @BeetleBar, Brisbane.
Despite competing against the rugby, these 3 talented bands managed to draw an excited and attentive crowd to the Beetle Bar tonight.
Making it with 5 mins to spare after an epic drive from Sydney (which proved too much for Dean’s poor Magna, retiring on the side of the road in Forster 🙁), Tin Sparrow took the stage with confidence after their sold out show at The Vanguard the previous night.
This 5 piece have shaped a modern folk, tinged with country rhythm and harmony. Opening the set with some driving and melodic sounds, the crowd soon took notice, and were engaged by the time the slower stripped back tune Bricks played, a stand out which created a nice dynamic in the set. TS continued to impress the growing crowd, showing their depth of material, and no doubt confirmed their rising reputation as a tight live band.
The second band of the evening, Mushu, gave a strong performance. My first time seeing the Sydney band, they gave first impressions and similarities with Tegan and Sara, in a very cool way. The songs were tight, and certainly inspired me to seek out more Mushu in the future!
As Howard Moon would say, “I see a boundary, and I eat a boundary”. As was the feeling I felt from hearing FOUNDS live for the first time. In a musical sense, their freeform song structure instantly draws you into the ride of their unique set. Only being together for 12 months, the 6 piece have managed to create a unique and defined sound and aesthetic. Subtle yet energetic, the eventual comparisons I grasp would be Sigor Rós and Foals, hangin with Bjork… An engaging performance from a band on their way to great things, finished perfectly with their drummer splitting his mallet on the final accent. Rock!
… And apparently the Reds won. Great success all round.
Founds play The Oxford Art Factory on Thursday July 14th.

G.R.E.A.T Party 2
Ross De Chene Hurricanes – ‘Um Yeah I Surf’ (mp3)
Skinny white dudes can’t hold their own on the court? Balls. As if Bill Murray saving the day at three quarter time in Space Jam wasn’t enough to prove otherwise. This weekend, Melbourne raffs Ross De Hurricanes and The White Goods will be stomping all over a suburban basketball court in the name of a G.R.E.A.T Party (2).
Music and basketball? Who’da thunk. As punters from last week’s Community Cup would agree, music and sporting activities do go down well. For some slam dunk attempts and some rad party jams from both bands, head on over to Coburg Basketball Courts at 3pm tomorrow.
ps. Here’s the White Goods new track ‘Fools’.
