Jack Flash – “Rebel’s Revenge” (mp3)

Listen to

When I took a temporary job in Toowoomba back in October, I did so with the mindset that it would only be for a couple of months, and that I could go back to Brisbane for gigs every weekend if I wanted to.

The temporary job led me to a permanent one and four months on, I’m settled in and starting to explore the city’s music scene. Sure, there are a lot of dreadful covers bands and a few originals bands that are inexplicably worse, but there is some cool quirky stuff going on.

Jack Flash are a Toowoomba folk-punk band for people who like Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and drinking lots of home brew. I find bands like this more “punk” than certain bands being given a leg-up by the national broadcaster’s youth arm and hell, I’d prefer to get my Australiana this way than being forced to listen to John Williamson drawl his way through True Blue.

They supported Defiance, Ohio earlier on this week. Stalk them on Facebook.

Kids climbing trees, coppers herding a few hundred out of a Richmond backyard before 12 and waking up with considerable bruises the following morning after being pelted in the face with lemons. A year, a few more yard/warehouse shindigs and a few band signings later, I OH YOU seem to understand what productive partying really is. If grinding up against international visitors (Yeasayer/Foals) in a foam pit takes your fancy, or alternatively if you’re in it for the tunes (DZ/Ships Piano/Loon Lake etc.) hit us up at rsvp@whothehell.net by 5pm this Thursday with your best party antics and your details to go in the running for a double pass.

Hi guys,

First up apologies about the downtime, we have been experiencing site issues and I’ve been having trouble trying to fix it.

After almost 5 years of discovering and sharing new Australian music, the time has come for me to take a break. It has been my great pleasure and privilege to present to you what I think is the best new Australian music and I thank all of you who have spent time reading and listening to the amazing output of Australian musicians. This blog would have fallen apart without the help of contributors past and present, so I thank you too fellow bloggers. Editor Matt Hickey will continue to run this blog and he is contactable at his usual email address. If you’d like to contact me, my other email address still works.

Bye!

Electric Sea Spider is a pretty cool dude. You know, the type that’s just all like “oh hey, yeah I make music, kinda, I play sometimes but mostly chill in my bedroom with my sampler and give shit away for free, dig?” It’s hard to fault a guy who’s given away multiple albums, EPs and mixtapes for free just because – clearly he does it for the love it. His Myspace lists his grand ambition to record the theme song for a cartoon and you can totally imagine his cut up, stuttering hip hop beats fitting in nicely with an adult swim program.

Mohican Beats is his latest EP and you can grab it from his Myspace (linked below). It’s my favourite record of his so far – the least ambient and the most beat heavy. He also rings in some guests vocals from a few dudes from the States (or dudes putting on American accents). This doesn’t sound like it came outta Melbourne, which is a compliment for people that dig this kind of hip hop. Even if you don’t you should still download because it’s free and one day it might come on when your iPod is on shuffle on you’ll be all like “damn, I’ve been missing out.” It could happen.
