Although my coverage of these guys my have subsided of late, my love for their musics has not. Fishing are one of my favourite discoveries of 2k10 alongside Guerre – who, as luck would have it, is featured on the top track ‘Boyfriend,’ lending his reverbed falsetto to a classic Fishing beat. This Sydney-based duo make glitchy, summery, sample-based beats that bisect hip hop and chillwave. Given their production-heavy output, it’s natural that they’d be trying their hand at the odd remix. I think their Alpine ‘Heartlove’ remix is more successful than their Jinja Safari one, but it is and will probably continue to be worth listening to anything with the name “Fishing” attached to it.

FYI, if you’re into this sort of stuff then you should probably be reading Life Aquatic, a great new blog outta Sydney that covers a lot of similar music and whose love for Guerre rivals even mine.

After receiving praise for their EP Heavy Harm, spending the year supporting bands like Phoenix, Surfer Blood, Silversun Pickups and just recently wrapping up up a national tour with roving tropicana party The Holidays, Papa Vs. Pretty have finally taken a breather. They’ve spent November writing and rehearsing stuff for their upcoming record, but will be back in December to do a few shows, play Peats Ridge and Pyramid Rock, as well as a support slot with Canada’s Hot Hot Heat.

Papa Vs. Pretty will be playing a gig with Fuzz Phantoms and Glastonbury booked/Unearthed high winners Stonefield at the East Brunswick Club in Melbourne next Wednesday (December 1st).

East Brunswick All Girls Choir – ‘Essendon 1986’ (mp3)

Don’t be fooled – East Brunswick All Girls Choir may sound like The Langley Schools Music Project in name, but aurally they are nothing alike. This is rough, raw melodic rock from this great Melbourne-but-soon-to-be-Berlin-bound band. And this is definitely one band that you can picture in Berlin – they keep it “real” and “loose.”

‘Essendon 1986’ comes from their upcoming debut album ‘Sandhurst Town,’ which will be released by Departed Sounds in the near future. Their goodbye party goes down at Melbournes NSC on December 17th so get along and say your goodbyes.

Sean Ainsworth who fronts Melbourne’s Fearless Vampire Killers has been out on a solo venture. Solid live shows, Hives & Kasabian support slots and a bit of love from Kingsmill; The Fearless Vampire Killers have built a decent rep about town in the last couple of years. And while FVK’s brand of western infused surf swamp could easily make itself at home on the Death Proof soundtrack, Ainsworth’s solo stuff under the moniker Brainsworth offers a bit more respite.

‘Nothing’s Going Right’ is a tempered, lackadaisical track with a slight Parachutes vibe, while ‘She Wear the Break Up’ is an older track, but a real charmer nonetheless. Brainsworth does subtlety nicely without getting too narcotic. I’m a sucker for understated harmonies, shimmery percussion and lazy tunes to add to my hangover playlist, so this one ticks the boxes.

I think my favourite thing about posting the last Cut Copy song, ‘Where I’m Going,’ was the comment: “enough of this lame kumbaya shit. where are the SYNTHS guys!?”

I hate to break it to “simon,” who posted that comment, but he won’t be too much more impressed with ‘Take Me Over.’ This song goes even further in the Fleetwood Mac/Paul Simon (c. Graceland) direction of the previous song. This still sounds a lot like Cut Copy – probably on account of the meodic ‘ooos’ that populate every CC song ever (that’s a good thing) – but it’s definitely a move away from the sound that made them big.

That’s two from two now, which suggests the album as a whole (Zonoscope, pictured above) will be something of a departure. I’m excited either way. Even though the past two singles have grabbed me, I’ve loved everything these guys have put out since and including their I Thought Of Numbers EP and have faith that the album as a whole will be great – it has to be, look at that cover art?
