Johnsong 'Sneak' Clip

Johnsong is Sydneysider John Anthony, with a loop machine. John creates interesting enough repetitive soundscapes, which reminded me of the controversial ‘Animal Beatbox’ Tropfest winner this year – the short film clip to support the notion that a good idea with very limited funding can still win out, over work created with limitless budget and limited inspiration. No go forth and create, because with a film costing $85 you too could be the winner of Tropfest! … And own this town.

Johnsong is performing at Kino 46 Short Film Festival, June 6 (@ The Caravan in Marrickville).
Above segue is nominated for ‘Best music to film segue in a review’.

Peace!

DZ Deathrays – ‘Brutal Tapes’

, , No Comment

Known also as ‘those dudes who make killer filmclips’, Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley/DZ/DZ Deathrays’ Brutal Tapes marks the second EP for the thrash punk (thrush?) dance DUO.

I bold/caps duo as they make more noise than that plane Snoop Dogg piloted in one of his acting career ‘highpoints’ if it cut laps on [insert relevant street] on a Friday. In a good way.

Compiled of studio recorded, house party (complete with rowdy bro crowd vocals) recorded and remixed tracks, Brutal Tapes is a polished, harder, sexier offering of dirty-glorious guitar riffs and belting drums from the Brisvegans.

It is about 5/7ths killer, though, with the two remixes taking some punch out, but to be fair it’s a tough ask to make it any more danceable. To be unfair they should’ve left it at five tracks.

The filler isn’t unlistenable, but the remixes seem limp compared to the rest of Brutal Tapes, really just showing that these two don’t require anything else added to their formula.

They even slip in bongos, and it fits. It fits so damn well you won’t look at bongos the same way. Amazing.

And live? Fuck. They’re even better in all their ear smashing glory.

Dananananaykroyd picked them up for another bout of Splendour sideshows when they get back to our shores after tearing the UK a new one, so if you haven’t already hit that then make it happen.

I’mma go ahead and put Gebbie St. up for the sexiest song of 2010/11. This (NSFW) fan made clip captures all of that.

Elizabeth Rose – 'Throw me to the Stars'

Elizabeth Rose – ‘Throw me to the Stars’ (mp3)

Listen to

Something really fresh here. Elizabeth Rose is a one lady show hailing from Sydney town. More balls than a sports store & charming to boot – coupled with the irresistable jazz charms of ‘Throw me to the Stars’ and you have one damn fine new artist.

I dig the vibe of this track – it feels innocent and raw, but with production belying Elizabeth Rose’s youth. It’s dark and rough but still bright and ridiculously listenable (unlike this).

She’s headlining a show at The Gaelic in Sydney on the 25th of May (that’s next week) so make your way on down.

Children Collide – 'Loveless' (video)

So impressed with team behind Children Collide’s new video for ‘Loveless’. The clip was produced by Michael Cody, shot by Germain McMicking of Flood Projects and directed by lauded Animal Kingdom director David Michôd.

For a one shot take involving make up, manhandling and a hairdresser who’s willing to excoriate four layers of skin along with six months of follicle commitment, Johnny McKay’s stoic performance deserves some serious applause.

Children Collide hit the road in August for their Loveless tour, see below the jump for full dates.

Love Migrate (Goodnight Owl) – 'Little Kid'

Love Migrate – ‘Little Kid’

Listen to

Name changes. Risky stuff. Seems to be working for DZ Deathrays though (formerly DZ) who are currently having a grand old time in the UK.

Goodnight Owl are also jumping in on the switch. The Melbourne band have added new members to the bill and are changing their name to Love Migrate.

Here’s the first listen on the interwebs of their new track ‘Little Kid’. Really digging this buoyant number which in my mind, is lot more substantial than their older stuff. They’ve swapped folktronica for staunch hooks that have a little more ‘oomph’. And it’s sounding decent.

The band will be relaunching as Love Migrate on July 2nd at the Grace Darling. It’s a bit like a funeral, but a welcome one of sorts.

Kins – ‘Mockasins’

Listen to

Melbourne’s Kins are finally releasing their mini LP Dancing Back and Forth in Whipped Cream on May 20th. The LP was recorded in Kins’ home studio late 2010 and mastered by Matt Voigt (Cat Power, Augie March, Big Scary) earlier this year.

The band have also just been announced on the bill for newcomer Castle Festival alongside a list of other local acts.

These guys put on a pretty swell live show, although I’m still yet to witness some smooth choreography and whipped dairy goods as the LP title suggests. Three shots at redemption below.
