SUBURB SERIES: RaRa

, , No Comment

RaRa

Craft is transient, as are its makers. When the creative hunch strikes, it’s not uncommon to move as far as we can from familiarity – but more often than not, we seem to return back to the places from where we begin. We spent a day driving around suburbia with Melbourne based alt hip hop group RaRa for our new ‘Suburbs’ series, which aims to shine a light on local musicians and their ongoing relationship with the places where they live.

Nestled in the cosy suburbia that is Melbourne’s inner east is Doncaster; more commonly known to locals as ‘Donny’. A leafy, working class suburb bordered by Eastlink and the Yarra, ‘Donny’ is marked by prams, modified Commodores and rendered 80s brick family dwellings with sloping double carparks.

Middle class Pleasantville seems miles from the the stomping ground where you would have expected RaRa’s slanted genre-bending hip-hop to have taken shape. But from what we saw driving around the neighbourhood; touring empty swimming pools, wandering into unused houses that were former party sites and visiting the family homes the boys still reside in – even if the four boys claim they’re “from another planet”, this will still be home.

WTH PRESENTS: Morning Harvey – East Coast tour

Morning Harvey

Brisbanites Morning Harvey are setting out on a tour of M̶a̶d̶c̶h̶e̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ the East Coast to mark the release of their new single ‘Girl Euphoria (Come Back to Me)’.

I used to think that unnecessary uses of parentheses’ were just superfluous things you used when you weren’t really sure if the first line of your chorus was better than the second – or just stupid gimmicks Iceladic people applied for their own entertainment. Beyond the brackets, ‘Girl Eurphoria (Come Back to Me)’ is sharp slice of psych-pop. Much like The Laurels, Morning Harvey aren’t slinging anything ‘new’, but their dreamy re-appropriations are comforting for anyone who finds solace in big melodies, pedal panning and the rest that comes with deft hands and a great sound guy.

The new track follows on from the band’s 2012 debut EP Well For Wishes, which we reckon is worth revisiting if you like what you hear.

We’re presenting Morning Harvey’s upcoming tour with Spark & Opus and have 2 double passes to give away to the band’s Melbourne and Sydney shows. Email us at editors@whothehell.net.

WTH PRESENTS: Cull – ‘Inside Your Head’ Tour

, , No Comment

Cull_inside-your-head-tour-A3_web_2

Cull sort of sound like Deerhunter and Brian Eno at a scientologist’s housewarming party. If you can get your head around that, then you’ll probably dig them, as we do.

If you’ve heard ‘World Inside Your Head’, ‘Good People Disappear’ or managed to grasp an earful of the band’s strange, starry-eyed schtick, you’ll agree it’s pretty special. Cull’s sound is warm enough to feel familiar, but the odd face-melt of a solo makes keeps things interesting and makes the rest of our exports look a bit Lame Impala.

We’re presenting the band’s upcoming ‘Inside Your Head’ tour. We’re also giving away a double pass to each show – email editors@whothehell.net with your details and why you’d like ’em.

INTRODUCING: Logitech UE BOOM

, , No Comment

ueboom

*Advertisement from Logitech*

I bought a set of Logitech computer speakers about 8 years ago. Various desktop systems, house migrations and house parties all soundtracked through a trusty 2 speaker/bass box setup. Worked for me.

Speaker days are gone though. We’re ‘mobile’, whatever that means. The obvious problem is staying portable – without sound quality the equivalent of having your head jammed in a tin can.

Enter the UE BOOM Tall Boy. I’m calling it a Tall Boy cause it looks like a large German beer can. Except fluorescent.

If you don’t believe me, here’s thirty seconds of hot people roadtesting the damn thing.

YouTube Preview Image

The sound is sprayed in 360-degrees via. a tube shape and it’s surprisingly even in every direction. Perfect for ‘spin the bottle’ right? You can lose the ear buds, which we all know are just for blocking out the crazy people on the train. This one is perfect for festival season. The UE BOOM is made for hanging up in your tent (tuff-as-nuts design), getting sloshed with 360°degree Flume pumping into the night (15 hr battery life) or wearing it around your neck (lanyard hook included) – if you’re that type of guy.

And yes, you can hold your speaker and your beer in the same hand – it’s water and dirt resistant too. But if you can’t be bothered holding it, you could grab two of them and pair them together via the UE BOOM App. Why would you bother I hear you thinking, well either double the sound or left & right stereo separation… BOOM!

These babies retail for $199.95 herewhich is like half the price of a Splendour ticket! So check em out and you could nab one for the summer festival season – so you can wake up alone, plastered in a paddock at Meredith 2013, booming Nile Rodgers from an ergonomic speaker around your neck.

Check out more reviews here and GET TO IT.

PRESENTS: ‘COOL PARTY’

, , No Comment

cool-party-bigsound

Cool. That word still hurts. I gave up a long time ago at 13 where my aspirations ended at owning at least two pieces of Dada Damani clothing and saving enough pocket change to buy an Amanda Perez CD. No regrets though. Turns out all the other gawky kids who also spent recess labeling their floppy disks in the library and tinkering with the Casios at concert band practice ended up doing alright. Most of the them turned out to electronic freaks of nature (see list below for proof).

We’ve teamed up with our friends from incredible Brisband/NYC electronic label Silo Arts for a not-so-official BIGSOUND showcase & after party, aptly named ‘COOL PARTY’.

Come and celebrate all things fun with 10 of Australia’s best electronic/pop acts + FREE entry. It also happens to fall on my birthday, so there’s a high chance you’ll find me in a corner of Alahmbra Lounge cradling a loop pedal and eating cake.

WHOTHE HELL PRESENTS: Fifth Floor Warehouse Party ft. The Murlocs

, , No Comment

murlocs

Anyone who has a decent appreciation for local music understands the importance of a shoddy venue. If the walls aren’t peeling, the toilet seat isn’t unhinged and the floor doesn’t sound like velcro when you trod on it, it’s probably not worth your time. This might be though. Along with the folk from Mess & Noise and Inpress, we’re proud to present the first installment of a warehouse party series by Fifth Floor.

Not many of us live on Lena Dunham’s party budget so don’t expect a mechanical bull or…this. Fifth Floor however, have put together a solid line up of bands, Baby Janis and the country’s finest projection artists to make your eyes pop.

The party will be held at a “secret” location on Saturday August 3rd with a venue announcement closer to the date. Headlining the bill are our favourites The Murlocs and joining them are Flyying Colours, Strangers From Now On (who played our last party), The Octopus Ride, Dan Trolley and Premium Fantasy. There will be plenty of visual art and projections happening too (because, Brunswick) – courtesy of Thomas Russell aka. Astral Projection & ZonkvisionIf that’s not enough of a social lubricant for you, then you ought to stay home.
