The Field Trip – ‘Give Me A Break’ Video
The Field Trip – ‘Give Me A Break’ video looks like a collection of Super 8 shots but given the jello effect I’m gonna go ahead and guess it was shot with a DSLR and then given a ‘vintage look’. Please tell me if I’m wrong. Either way these kids are from Melbourne and have adopted the 60’s surfer fuzz sound that is easy on the ears just as the video is easy on the eyes. Nice work, look forward to more from these dudes.

Old Mate – ‘I Got Fired’
Old Mate – ‘I Got Fired’ (mp3)
This one reminds me of Tex Perkins’ ‘Better Get A Lawyer’. Straight forward riff with lyrics that go something like “I got fired. I didn’t know why. So I stayed home. And I got too high”… what’s not to like. Old Mate is Pat Telfer of Bitch Prefect who had previously worked on this as a solo thing but is now performing with full band.

Harts – 'All Too Real'
Harts – ‘All Too Real’ (mp3)
Darren Harts is Harts, a one man show out of Melbourne. Lars Stalfors from the Mars Volta somehow got his hands on some demos and offered to mix his EP. This sound ain’t no gamechanger, but gamechanging is irrelevant when you can get down and BOOGIE. This kid WILL kick some serious goals overseas, just you wait. And when he does – I would love to see him bring out a full piece brass band Friendly Fires style. ‘All Too Real’ has that whole Streetparty era vibe right down – adequate synth hooks, bites of face melting guitar (post. 2:46) and a good dose of indie peacocking to keep all the kids happy.
Hart’s EP Offtime will be released soon. Keep in the loop here and here.
Money For Rope – ‘Misery Lane’ Video
Whilst I don’t condone the use of powder clouds in music videos, I wholeheartedly support the act of shots and body slamming. Great song. Sick video. Don’t forget ‘This Epic Tour’ kicks off this week. I reckon these mad bastards will def be worth seeing live – http://whothehell.net/archives/14111
The Ocean Party – ‘In A Knot’
The Ocean Party – ‘In A Knot’ (mp3)
‘In A Knot’ is the new single from the Ocean Party that is available as a free download and comes with a few B-sides as well. This track has a 90’s throwback to the Dinosaur Jr. era. There is something country about the deep vocals and a spoken verse/sweet melodic chorus sounds. ‘In A Knot’ has a warmth that feels familiar and a real catchy hook. The understated tone disguises the maturity of this band and I find this sound really comforting. The B-sides are well worth checking out too, in particular ‘Young Love’ which has a real dreamy peculiarity.
I didn’t bother rewriting this stuff lifted from their FaceBook – To celebrate the release of In A Knot, The Ocean Party will play a Saturday front-bar residency at the Tote Hotel in Collingwood throughout July, joined by two guests each week.
